WILMINGTON Howard didn’t panic after a lackluster first half.
The Wildcats turned it up about three notches instead.
Earnest Austin and Gerald Wiggins combined to rush for 201 yards and three long touchdowns in the second half as Howard pulled away from Glasgow for a 38-22 victory on Thursday night at Baynard Stadium.
“Honestly, we talked about it all week, the fact that we’re a second-half team,” Howard coach Dan Ritter said. “Through film, we saw that Glasgow kind of faltered a little bit in the second half of the Lake Forest game last week. So we preached that all week, work hard and keep pounding.”
Glasgow (4-4, 3-2 Blue Hen Flight B) couldn’t hold an early 19-0 lead in a 35-27 loss to Lake Forest last week. And the Dragons – ranked seventh in Division II – couldn’t hold a 6-0 halftime lead against the fourth-ranked Wildcats (6-2, 5-1).
“The second half, we came out with more fire,” said Wiggins, who finished with 17 carries for 92 yards. “We got hyped up in the locker room and came out to play.”
Glasgow had the best of it early, as quarterback Isaiah Wilson V was 5-for-5 passing on the Dragons’ first drive. He completed short tosses for 13, 12, 18 and 4 yards, and fired a 3-yard strike to Michael Credle for a 6-0 lead with 9:25 remaining in the first quarter.
It stayed that way until halftime, as both teams struggled with penalties and turnovers. Glasgow had just 63 total yards at the half, while Howard only managed 52.
But the second half belonged to the Wildcats, starting with the kickoff. Trevon Bordrick turned a key block from Wiggins into a 60-yard return to the Dragons 23, and fullback William Morgan took it in from the 4 four plays later to tie the game at 6.
Glasgow turned it over on downs at its own 39, and Austin hit Nick Johnson for a big 32-yard gain to the 5 on third-and-8. Morgan plunged in again from the 2 two plays later, and added a two-point run to give the Wildcats their first lead, 14-6, with 6:09 left in the third quarter.
Then the big plays starting coming. Wiggins hit a seam up the middle, cut to his left and won the chase down the sideline for a 57-yard score and a 20-6 lead.
“It was a good run. We had good blocking downfield,” Wiggins said. “I saw the gap, and I took it.”
After a Glasgow punt, Austin faked to Morgan up the middle, cut to the right and took it all the way for a 63-yard score.
“Earnest is doing a nice job for us,” Ritter said. “It’s a play where you read it, and obviously he read it well.”
The Dragons answered with a score on a trick play, as Credle took a pitch and fired a 53-yard pass to Ja’saan Cunningham on fourth-and-11. But Austin went right back at it, faking to Morgan again and going left this time for a 45-yard keeper that made it 32-14 with 6:56 to play.
“They bite to the fullback, so I just go to the outside,” said Austin, who finished with 137 yards on just eight carries. “I saw the seam, and downfield the receivers blocked well.”
Wilson completed 14 of 28 passes for 118 yards for the Dragons. But Glasgow only managed 8 total yards on 22 rushing attempts.
