Prep football roundup: McKean earns first win

DeVon Taylor passed for one touchdown and ran for another as the McKean football team overcame an early deficit and defeated Dickinson 18-8 for its first victory of the season on Saturday at Delaware Stadium.

The Rams (0-4, 0-2 Blue Hen Flight B) jumped to an 8-0 lead in the second quarter on a 1-yard run by Jerome Blakeney and a two-point pass from Blakeney to Chase Lawhorne. The Highlanders (1-3, 1-2) pulled within 8-6 at the half on Taylor’s 10-yard pass to Jahliek Bucknal.

Then McKean took the lead with two fourth-quarter touchdowns – a 1-yard run by Taylor and a 15-yard burst from Amir Wynder.

Middletown 43, Delcastle 6: Sophomore quarterback Drew Fry passed for four touchdowns as the Cavaliers (4-0, 3-0 Blue Hen Flight A) scored an easy victory on the road.

Fry fired scoring passes of 44 and 20 yards to Anthony DelPercio and 45 yards to Kenneth Edelin as Middletown, ranked second statewide in Division I, built a 21-0 lead after one quarter.

The Cavaliers pushed it to 43-0 at the half on a 20-yard run by Jeffrey Lockwood, a 42-yard pass from Fry to DelPercio and a 31-yard run by Kedrick Whitehead. The Cougars (0-4, 0-2) scored the first points given up by the Middletown defense all season when Matthew McCary found the end zone on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Wilmington Friends 49, Red Lion Christian 20: Andrew Jaworski rushed for three touchdowns and Henry Gise scored twice as the Quakers (3-1) built a 35-6 halftime lead and cruised past the Lions (1-3).

Friends, ranked sixth statewide in Division II, got TD runs from Gise and Jaworski before Gise caught a 20-yard scoring pass from Justin Beneck. Then Jaworski crossed the goal line two more times, from 21 and 2 yards out.

St. Georges 47, Caesar Rodney 12: Brian Benson scored twice on 5-yard runs to get the Hawks (3-1) started on the way to a home victory over the Riders (0-4). The game was scheduled to be played at Caesar Rodney on Friday night, but was moved to the artificial turf field at St. Georges on Saturday due to recent rains.

Sequann Daniels returned a kickoff for a touchdown and Jared Wagenhoffer’s 1-yard run tied it for the Riders early in the second quarter. But St. Georges scored the final 35 points to pull away.

Jalen Smith ran 4 yards for a touchdown, Brian Rush returned a fumble 25 yards for a score, Tyrese Owens scored on a 1-yard burst, Craig Congo returned an interception 27 yards for a TD and Robert Shorts threw a 28-yard scoring pass to Doug Phillips for the Hawks, ranked fourth statewide in Division II.

Howard 18, Hodgson 13: Tyhir Harley’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Korey Kent with 14 seconds to play gave the Wildcats (2-2, 2-0 Blue Hen Flight B) a victory over the Silver Eagles (2-2, 1-2).

Hodgson had taken a 13-12 lead on Aaron Webster’s 32-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.

Sussex Central 49, Sussex Tech 14: Timothy Jones ran for three touchdowns in the first half as the Golden Knights (3-1, 1-0 Henlopen North) built a 35-14 lead and cruised past the Ravens (2-2, 0-1) in a game pushed back a day by rain.

Isaiah Brown opened the scoring with a 3-yard run for Sussex Tech. But Kendrique Nocks answered with a 56-yard TD burst for Sussex Central, Jones added a 52-yard scoring run and Brady Bowden threw a 15-yard TD pass to Mark Tolson for a 21-7 lead after one quarter.

Brown scored from the 8 to pull the Ravens within a touchdown, only to see Jones break free for 23- and 60-yard scoring sprints to put the Golden Knights in control.

Brandywine 28, Christiana 6: The Bulldogs (1-3, 1-0 Blue Hen Flight B) got touchdowns from four different players to get into the win column.

Garnett Taylor scored on a 50-yard run, John Barlow found the end zone from 33 yards out, Rajae Britt caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Jack Russell and Curtis Blain punched one in from the 5 for Brandywine.
