Athlete of the week: Halle Parker, senior, Caesar Rodney girls tennis
THE WEEK: Won both matches 6-0, 6-0 at first singles as the top-ranked Riders swept Polytech 5-0 last Monday and Smyrna 5-0 on Wednesday to improve to 4-0 on the season.
THE CONSISTENCY: “She’s a very consistent player,” CR coach Zach Taylor said of Parker. “I know just from my own experience in playing with her, she will wear you down. She’ll make you make mistakes, because you try to go for too much.”
THE STREAK: Parker has never lost a regular-season match in four years with the Riders, who have won 106 straight matches over the last eight years. “It’s nice to know that we’re undefeated, and everyone is looking at us like we’re the best,” Parker said. “It’s a good feeling. I feel pressure not to lose, and that’s kind of nerve-wracking.”
THE JUMP: Parker played at first singles her first two years, losing in the semifinals of the DIAA Girls Tennis Tournament each time. She won a DIAA title at second singles last season, and is back at first singles this year. “I think she’ll be fine,” Taylor said. “She knows what to expect from the competition. She knows what’s ahead of her at the end of the season, and what she needs to do to be ready.”
THE STRENGTH: “I like my serve, and I like my forehand,” Parker said. “My forehand is powerful, and with my serve I can dictate where to place the ball and then I can come into the net.”
THE FAMILY: Parker, who has been playing since age 10, comes from a tennis family. Her brother, Nate, teamed with Sri Myneni to win a DIAA title at first doubles for CR in 2011, then won at third singles the following year. Then her other brother, Trey, won a DIAA third singles title in 2014. “She’s constantly trying to improve and get better,” Taylor said. “I’ve known her for a long time, just from her brothers playing here. Seeing her as a little kid and watching her now as a senior in high school, it’s a pretty big transition.”
THE CLASSROOM: “My favorite subject is personal fitness,” Parker said. “I like working out, and I like the endurance that it builds for tennis.”
THE FUTURE: Parker plans to continue playing tennis at the collegiate level. She is considering Southern University, Mount St. Mary’s and Delaware State, but has yet to decide on a destination.
